The Public Works Department provides general supervision and assistance to all public works areas, including Street, Sanitation, Water & Sewer Maintenance and direct supervision to Traffic Division, Building Maintenance, Utility Inspections, Utility Locations and Cemetery Management.

The Public Works Department assists the general public by providing various types of information and assistance with miscellaneous complaints.  It is also involved with setting quality standards, planning, goal setting, record keeping and various other activities as required.

All streets with U.S., N.C., or Secondary Road Numbers are maintained by the NCDOT.

  • Most of the City’s Street Lights are on the CP&L System.
  • Duke Power (Telephone 498-2638) maintains street lights north of Commerce Place.
  • Randolph Electric (Telephone 625-5177) maintains street lights in their service areas, mostly east of Zoo Parkway and some areas between West Central Avenue and Pineview Street.

Requests for street light repair must include the pole number.
