Seasonal Water Treatment Changes

City of Asheboro water customers will likely notice some changes to the taste or smell of their water beginning Monday, November 14 and continuing over the next few months.  These changes are part of the City’s annual water treatment plan.

Typically, the City uses chloramines, a compound of chlorine and ammonia, as the primary disinfection treatment.  This treatment results in water with little odor or taste.  Typically from mid-November to mid-January, the City changes the treatment to a pure chlorine treatment.  This is done to help ensure a high level of disinfection for water mains, and meets requirements set by the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources.  This treatment typically results in a more noticeable chlorine odor and taste, although chlorine levels during this period are actually lower than other times of the year.

Customers with special health concerns, such as those on kidney dialysis, are encouraged to seek advice about drinking water from their medical professional. Please call the Water Treatment Plant Manager at 626-1215 for questions related to the water treatment process.
