Water Notice

The City of Asheboro water treatment plant experienced a malfunction in the fluoride distribution system on Tuesday, June 29, resulting in an over-release of that chemical.  As of late Tuesday afternoon, fluoride levels in the city’s system had returned to a normal operating range.  The city worked with local media to alert residents of the situation, and to advise residents in the affected area (west of US 220) that they should run taps for a few minutes to clear their individual lines as an extra precaution.

Residents who consumed a large quantity of water in the affected area Tuesday may have experience temporary affects such as nausea or skin irritation.  Symptoms should not last more than a day or two.   Residents with specific health concerns are encouraged to consult their physician.  According to the State Division of Public Health toxicologists, no long-term health effects should be expected from this minimal exposure.

The fluoride feed system has been taken off-line until an anti-siphon valve can be installed, which will prevent this type of malfunction from occurring in the future.

For full details, click here for Tuesday’s media release.
