Special Movie Presentation

Sunset Theatre in downtown Asheboro will host a special movie presentation to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.  On September 9, 10 and 11 the theatre will have free showings of the feature-length documentary “Rebirth.”  Through time-lapse photography and the stories of individuals shaped by September 11, 2001 the movie shows a living history of the human spirit coping with disaster.

From early 2002 through 2009, the REBIRTH film crew chronicled the lives of five people directly affected by 9/11. The participants include a survivor from an impact floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC); a firefighter who survived the collapse of the WTC but lost his best friend; a high school student who lost his mother; a young woman who lost her fiancé; and a construction worker who lost his brother, assisted with recovery efforts, and is presently helping to build the Freedom Tower. Their narratives are the thread of recovery and resiliency from grief, loss and trauma that comprise the unique message of the film. (From the “Project Rebirth” web site)

The special movie presentation has been made possible by the Randolph Rotary, Asheboro Rotary, Midstate Rotary, the Sunset Theatre Capital Campaign Committee and the City of Asheboro.  The Courier-Tribune is a media sponsor of the event.

The movie will show on Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, September 10 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, September 11 at 3 and 7 p.m.  The theatre is located at 234 Sunset Avenue in downtown Asheboro.  For more information, call 626-1240.

Asheboro Joins National Night Out

The City of Asheboro’s Police Department is inviting residents to participate in the city’s first National Night Out event by attending a community cook-out and police meet and greet at the Evangelical & Reformed Church at 221 Cliff Road on August 2 from 6 – 9 p.m.  Jerry Hill from CUOC will be cooking up hot dogs, and the police department will have a number of displays including the crime scene van and special weapons and tactics van.  Following the event, residents are encouraged to return home and turn on their porch lights and get to know their neighbors.

This event is supported by the Greystone Neighborhood Watch.  The Asheboro Police Department currently works with approximately a dozen Neighborhood Crime Watch programs.  An organized Neighborhood Watch program offers several benefits.  First, it creates a forum for neighbors to meet and get to know one another.  Second, it is a way for the Police Department to share safety tips with residents.  Finally, these groups send the message that the community is actively involved in crime prevention.

If you would like to start a Neighborhood Watch program, contact Detective Smith at 626-1300 x 331.  Residents are also reminded that they can contact the Police Department at 626-1300 if they have tips or concerns about crime.

What makes a town appealing? How do you ensure that residents and visitors can easily access businesses, and that the look of these businesses reflects a town's heritage? The City of Asheboro's Community Development Department has revised the Design & Performance Standards that guide development within the City. They are now seeking public input and comment on these proposed revisions before City Council votes on whether or not to enact them.

  • Efficient and balanced vehicular and pedestrian circulation
  • Interconnectivity and congestion
  • Landscaping and tree canopy
  • Building orientation and facades (and how buildings “address” the street)
  • Native building materials
